Project Citizen as a Vehicle for Transforming Civic Disposition into Ecological Citizenship

The escalating environmental crisis requires a reorientation of civic character from passive environmental awareness toward the development of citizens who are actively engaged in ecological responsibility. This study examines the capacity of the Project Citizen learning model to facilitate the transformation of civic disposition into ecological citizenship. The distinctive contribution of this study is its positioning of Project Citizen, which has conventionally been applied to broader public policy issues, as a pedagogical instrument for strengthening environmental awareness and responsibility. A literature review was employed as the research method by examining relevant scholarly articles, books, and academic documents, followed by critical analysis to formulate theoretically grounded conclusions. The findings suggest that the sequential learning activities embedded in Project Citizen, beginning with the identification of public problems and extending to the formulation of proposed solutions, provide substantial opportunities for translating environmental concern into concrete practices of environmental preservation. The literature synthesis further generates a conceptual framework that connects character development with environmental literacy. Thus, Project Citizen offers an important contribution to the expansion of Pancasila and Civic Education scholarship by demonstrating that contemporary citizenship education should extend beyond legal and political concerns to incorporate citizens' ethical responsibility for global environmental sustainability.
